South African hairdresser Richard Wood achieved his ambition of becoming a hairstylist aboard the luxury liner the HMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (the ‘QE2’) in 1985, and for the next twelve years experienced the onboard and shore highs, lows and excesses of the late 1980s and beyond.
During his time on board, Richard came into contact with world leaders the likes of Bill Clinton, George W Bush, FW De Klerk and Nelson Mandela; rubbed shoulders with royalty including the Queen, Princess Di and Prince Andrew; met famous actors including Telly Savalas and Terence Stamp; styled the hair of renowned singers like Rod Stewart and Petula Clarke; sat down for breakfast with dancer-actor Gregory Hines and got up to dance with actress-comedienne Su Pollard; and had encounters with icons such as Mrs Peggy Iacocca (wife of Lee) and Mrs Bobo Rockefeller.
He got to know – in some cases, intimately – some of the world’s most pampered people, including the super-wealthy (for instance, one couple who annually rented eight penthouse suites on the ship at a cost of hundreds of thousands of pounds – to avoid feeling ‘claustrophobic’) and downright eccentric (like the woman who travelled with over one hundred stuffed animals, for which she required a separate stateroom).
The crew and staff, too, provided fodder for endless anecdotes – from the various QE2 captains (some frankly frightening; others stalwart and dignified) and the man who would become (and still is) the Queen’s hairdresser, to the masseur with the outsized member and the cabin stewards, one of whom moonlighted as a lesbian porn star and another who turned out to be a serial killer. These and others got up to all sorts below decks, after hours and sometimes while on duty, including ‘bin diving’ in the crew bar and smoking spliffs on the outer decks, and being arrested in Thailand and almost fired in Bermuda.
The QE2, for all its luxury, was a hotbed of sex and drugs ‘What is it about walking up that gangway that puts a glint in the passengers’ eyes?’ Richard muses at one stage in the book. ‘The throb of the nine-cylinder diesel engines? The thrum of the two propulsion motors?’ Richard recalls high-jinks with not only passengers but also staff and crew, and says that not for nothing was the QE2 once dubbed ‘the cocaine cruiser’.

This story captured the essence of what it was like to be on the QM2! Filled with so many hilarious experiences and eye-opening revelations, I couldn't put it down! Well worth the read!
A thoroughly entertaining and eye-opening look into what goes on below the decks of a huge ocean liner. The wicked funny stories are interspersed with fascinating facts about not only the QE2 but plenty of other things. A must read!!!!
